Arizona Democratic Party Marks Anniversary of January 6th Insurrection

January 6th, 2025

PHOENIX, AZ — On the anniversary of the January 6, 2021, attack on the United States Capitol, the Arizona Democratic Party solemnly remembers one of the darkest days in our nation’s history. The violent assault on American democracy left more than 140 law enforcement officers injured as they battled for hours to preserve our democracy from violent insurrectionists.

January 6th was not a protest. It was a disgraceful attack fueled by lies about a free and fair election, aimed at overturning the will of the American people and stopping the peaceful transfer of power.

That day, Capitol Police and law enforcement officers from across the region stood between democracy and chaos. They were beaten, assaulted, and terrorized while doing their jobs. Their bravery protected our republic.

“January 6th was a direct attack on the foundation of our democracy and on the men and women sworn to protect it,” said Arizona Democratic Party Chair Charlene Fernandez. “We honor the officers who were injured that day and recommit ourselves to telling the truth about what happened, because democracy cannot survive if we excuse or erase political violence.”

The events of January 6th continue to reverberate today, as some political leaders attempt to downplay, rewrite, or even glorify the attack. The Arizona Democratic Party rejects those efforts unequivocally.

On this anniversary, we remember, we honor the brave service of the Capitol Police, and we recommit to truth, accountability, and the ongoing work of protecting American democracy.
